Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Island in the Atlantic Ocean which lie off the West coast of Africa, and is popular for Fuerteventura holidays, particularly Fuerteventura package deals. It has a population of 75,000 and its largest city is Puerto del Rosario.
The first settlers arrived from North Africa and were known as Mahorero or Maho which dervies from the ancient word ‘Mahos’ relating to a type of goatskin shoe worn by these settlers. These settlers lived in caves and some semi-subterranean dwellings. Some of which been discovered by Archaeologists.
In the 11th Century BC Phoenicians arrived to Fuerteventura and a couple of centuries later the island was mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey. After being inhabited by Moors in the middle ages the Island fell to the french in the beginning of the 15th century.
Tourism arrived in the 1960’s with the building of the present airport, and is particular famed for its Fuerteventura package deal holidays.
The island dates back 20 million years when a Volcanic eruption from the canary hotspot created magma which solidified into what is now fuerteventura. The islands highest point is 807m at mount Jandia which is at the Souhtwestern part of the Island.
During winter months the Island has a temperature of between 15 and 22 degrees C. While the summer ranges from 20 to 35 degrees C. A peculiar sandstorm arising in the Sahara known as the Calima can cause high temperatures, dry air, fine sand and sometimes African locusts to the Island.

On the Jandian peninsula Cofete is a small village with an enormous 35km long beach. Near the village is the Winter Vila. A famous dwelling with conspiracy theories attributed to it.
